IEBC Gazettes 726 Nominated Members of County Assemblies
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has gazetted all elected Members of County Assembly ahead of the official opening of the 3rd session of the County Assemblies. In the Gazette Notice dated 9th September 2022, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati listed 188 persons representing marginalized special interest groups including youth, persons with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities nominated by their respective political parties. In addition, 538 women have been gazetted as part of the gender top-up list, bringing the total number of Members of County Assembly to 2,176 once sworn in from Tuesday this week.
The nominations to the County Assemblies are anchored on the 2012 General Elections Regulations where "Each political party shall submit to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission a party list of all persons who would stand elected if the party were entitled to seats in the National Assembly, Senate or the County Assembly, as the case may be on the basis of proportional representation" The process of finalizing the party lists has been a hotly contested issue with each political party expected to furnish the Commission with a list containing the name, address, age, sex, disability and category of disability, phone number, occupation, elective post sought and other qualifications for a nomination seat.
The IEBC is also mandated to allocate the nomination seats in the County Assemblies based on the following formula: number of seats won by a political party divided by the total number of seats multiplied by available seats for allocation in the respective County Assembly.
